Recycling conserves energy and natural resources. Without recycling the US timber harvest would need to increase by 80 percent to meet our fiber demand. It takes from 17 to 20 trees to produce a ton of paper. Recycling saves more energy than waste-to-energy facilities produce. Recycling reduces the impact of mining and manufacturing. Recycling one ton of aluminum uses 95 percent less energy than mining bauxite, saving 37 barrels of oil per ton. Recycling reduces greenhouse emissions. Increasing the recycled content of paper and containers by 10 percent would reduce carbon emissions by 10 million metric tons. Recycling saves landfill space. One ton of paper would occupy 3.3 cubic yards in a landfill. |
