Waste is simply a resource in disguise.

Nature does not generate waste, man does.  Industry must learn to emulate the cyclical design of nature in order to become sustainable. While the steps to achieve such a goal may not be clear the zero waste target will inspire innovation and efficiencies that go beyond incremental “improvement” strategies.    We must first demand the extraordinary, then figure out how to supply it.

TIPS FOR YOUR  ZERO-WASTE EVENT:

-  Imagine no trash cans!
-  Hand out flyers, brochures only upon request
-  Use paper and other items that are recyclable.
-  Hand out gifts that are reusable and have no packaging (i.e. pens and coffee mugs)
-  Samples of food or beverages should be given out in biodegradable containers (i.e. napkins and PLA cups)
-  Biodegradable products, such as PLA (corn-based) containers, are available through Eco-Products
-  Pack it in, pack it out. Please remove the waste you bring to the site.
-  Place your discards in properly marked bins located conveniently throughout the site.
-  Don’t contaminate the bins with fast food containers, coffee cups or other items you bring to the event.

Compostable items include:

Most Food:

Fruits, Vegetables, Rice, Beans, Pasta, Bread, Cereal, Cheese, Eggshells, Dairy Products

bags, coffee grounds and filters, small wooden crates, sawdust, wood scraps, fiberboard, egg

Plants:

Floral trimmings, tree trimmings, leaves, grass, brush, weeds.

Greenware:

Any bio-based plastic alternative that has been certified “COMPOSTABLE”.

(Beware: some greenware is “Biodegradable” but NOT compostable!)

NOT COMPOSTABLE:

Any hydrocarbon plastic (#1 - #6), Styrofoam, plastic straws, plastic wrap or bags or gloves; aluminum foil; glass; any metal: cans, bottle tops; any paper lined with plastic including ‘drink boxes’ or aseptic packaging; liquids; any chemical, or hazardous waste, or container that once held chemicals.

Beverages served in a re-usable and handsome bottle or mug that will be treasured forever would be best.  Next best are beverages served in recyclable or compostable containers.
